World of Warcraft & WebKinz: Why They Work

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

A few days ago, a couple of us were crammed into a truck on the way to lunch. Several of us have kids, and we ended up talking about how incredibly popular WebKinz is. Somebody said it was simply a training ground for games like World of Warcraft. As we were talking, I suddenly realized why World of Warcraft and WebKinz are so popular.

What If You Could Pick Your Seat When Buying a Movie Ticket?

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

I’m currently in Bulgaria and recently went to a screening of the latest Indiana Jones movie. Since my wife and I decided to go to the movie with a group of friends on a Saturday night, we thought it best to buy the tickets in advance.

When we went to the box office to purchase our tickets, we were shown a screen that displayed the layout and available seats of that particular movie theater. We were then asked to pick the row and seat numbers we wanted. We were early enough to get seventh row center.

When Online Mobs Get Organized

Friday, April 4th, 2008

DiggWhen you do things in a crowd with no organization, no plan, and no clear leaders, chaos is usually the end result. And then sometimes the opposite occurs.

A few weeks ago there was a post on digg about being rickrolled. If you are not familiar with what a rickroll is, you can read about this most interesting phenomenon here. Haha! No you can’t. That was actually an example of being rickrolled. You can really read about it here.

Help Me, Commissioned Salesperson, You’re My Only Hope

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Circuit CityI read through an article on CNET yesterday that got me fired up about something I’ve had on my mind for the last three years - the unfortunate, yet inevitable, demise of Circuit City.

About three summers ago, I worked there part time as a TV/Home Theater salesperson and strange as it might sound, I absolutely loved it. Obviously I enjoyed being around the latest and greatest consumer electronics products, but I also got a lot of satisfaction from sharing what I knew with my customers and helping them pick out something that really rocked.

Using Your GPS for Walking Tours, Puzzles, or Even Paintball

Monday, March 31st, 2008

TomTom GPSI would be remiss if I didn’t blog about this. The reason I have not mentioned it prior to this is because it’s so freaking cool I can’t quite wrap my brain around it. I’ve always loved geocaching. This is where you use a GPS to get a specific location, find a “treasure box,” and then log it on the site. It’s a great way to get kids outside, get a little exercise for yourself, and be part of a really cool online group.

Paul’s Soapbox: Vista Gadgets, Mario Kart, and Kevin Rose

Monday, March 24th, 2008

image Paul’s Soapbox is a regular feature of TechConsumer where I sound off on various tech topics/products that I’m interested in (or hate). This is just my $.02, so consider yourself warned. This week’s subjects? Vista, Mario, and Kevin Rose…

For all the Vista users out there, I recently stumbled across an awesome program for the Vista Sidebar. It is called Amnesty Generator, and basically it will take the code for any web widget (think Google Gadgets, ESPN, etc) and turn it into a Vista Sidebar compatible gadget. It is a simple program, but works great; I use it to display the NBA.com live sports scores on my desktop. Check it out. There is also a Mac OS X version, but I have not used it.

Letting Your Flickr Photos Wander

Monday, March 24th, 2008

FlickrI’ve been having a lot of fun with Flickr lately. I like seeing the different ways my photos get reused. From Wikipedia to Schmap.com to a women’s magazine. Just for fun, I have added a “reused” tag to each of the photos I know has been reused somewhere. Here’s what I have so far.
