I would be remiss if I didn’t blog about this. The reason I have not mentioned it prior to this is because it’s so freaking cool I can’t quite wrap my brain around it. I’ve always loved geocaching. This is where you use a GPS to get a specific location, find a “treasure box,” and then log it on the site. It’s a great way to get kids outside, get a little exercise for yourself, and be part of a really cool online group.

I recently heard about Shortcuts.com, a new coupon website where you can add electronic coupons to your customer loyalty card, and I was intrigued. Normally I don’t bother with coupons because I never remember to take them with me, and they tend to expire before I get around to using them. Plus there is something really frustrating about pulling out a coupon, only to find out that it has expired. But Shortcuts.com seemed to get around most of the issues I have with coupon clipping, so I decided to try them out.

More News Out Showcasing Mac Security Issues
Thursday, March 27th, 2008 | Author: Paul Ellis

We took a lot of flack over a post back in January that questioned the security of Apple’s Mac OS X. TechConsumers left various comments ranging from “For some reason unknown to me, no one can ever show me a situation where a user opens a e-mail and their Mac turns into a robot sending out hundreds of e-mails” to “Mac OS X *is* inherently safer. You have to be a major league Windows zombie not to know and accept that.

Well, CanSecWest’s PWN 2 OWN contest has just shown that Mac OS X isn’t “inherently safer” and that clearly it is possible for a user to open an e-mail on a Mac and have it join a spam botnet.

The $100 PS3 Game: Gran Turismo 5
Wednesday, March 26th, 2008 | Author: Paul Ellis

When Sony announced that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue would be available for $40 in April, I couldn’t help but have a knee-jerk reaction. How could Sony get away with charging $40 for GT5 Reduced Lite Junior Prologue when the full version would sell for only $20 more? Here’s how, the word is out today that the full blown version of Gran Turismo won’t be out for another year! Is this a new business model for delayed games or just Sony trying to satiate the rabid Gran Turismo fans?

How To: Provide Phone Support That Doesn’t Suck
Wednesday, March 26th, 2008 | Author: Jonathan Adams

Phone Support

I work for SewellDirect.com, and I definitely get to see a lot of both sides of the phone support dilemma. I’ve worked there over a year and a half doing tech support through phone calls, email, and live chat. Here are my thoughts on the subject:

Paul’s Soapbox is a regular feature of TechConsumer where I sound off on various tech topics/products that I’m interested in (or hate). This is just my $.02, so consider yourself warned. This week’s subjects? Vista, Mario, and Kevin Rose…

For all the Vista users out there, I recently stumbled across an awesome program for the Vista Sidebar. It is called Amnesty Generator, and basically it will take the code for any web widget (think Google Gadgets, ESPN, etc) and turn it into a Vista Sidebar compatible gadget. It is a simple program, but works great; I use it to display the NBA.com live sports scores on my desktop. Check it out. There is also a Mac OS X version, but I have not used it.

Letting Your Flickr Photos Wander

I’ve been having a lot of fun with Flickr lately. I like seeing the different ways my photos get reused. From Wikipedia to Schmap.com to a women’s magazine. Just for fun, I have added a “reused” tag to each of the photos I know has been reused somewhere. Here’s what I have so far.

Amazon’s Attempt at Helping Its HD DVD Customers
Saturday, March 22nd, 2008 | Author: Bob Caswell

Amazon Blu-ray HD DVD Deal

Earlier this week Best Buy announced that it would offer $50 gift cards to its customers that purchased HD DVD players before February 23. Not only that, the company is giving some trade-in value for HD DVD players or movies, regardless of where they were purchased. Apparently Amazon wanted in on the good PR and has come up with its own way to hook up its HD DVD customers.

Here’s the deal I was emailed from Amazon since I’m a “valued HD DVD customer.” Links are placed exactly as they were in the email:

Sony LaptopSony and crapware have a special relationship, so much so that it takes over two minutes for its laptops to boot into Windows (compare that with 30 seconds for a MacBook). The company has even issued press statements explaining its reasoning: “The programs are carefully selected and provide benefits to many consumers, up to 30% of whom act on the offers.”

Choosing the Right HDTV: Plasma or LCD?
Thursday, March 20th, 2008 | Author: Dave Shumway

I’ve always been into computers, gadgets, and the like, but it wasn’t until I spent a summer selling TVs at Circuit City that I developed an appetite bordering on obsession…or disease. But hey, choosing a TV isn’t really as easy as it might sound. And sifting through a barrage of pixel counts, refresh rates, and contrast ratios can quickly turn what was once an exciting ride into a dark, scary, and confusing place.
